We’re excited to share updated swim lesson information from the Lafayette Family YMCA, where many of our Swim America families can continue their skills-based lessons. This document was created to help answer some of the most common questions we’ve received during the transition.
While this isn’t a Swim America program, the YMCA team values skill-based progression, and they are excited to welcome families this fall!
Registration + Monthly Scheduling
• YMCA swim lessons are scheduled month-to-month.
• Families can register for just one month or sign up in advance for multiple months (e.g. September through November).
• Kids are registered by level — if they advance during the session, the Y team will work with you to move them up.
• Spots are available first-come, first-served. Register early to keep your preferred time.
How to Register (Especially for Non-Members)
You’ll register through the YMCA website and portal: https://lafayettefamilyymca.org/
Note for Non-Members: The registration page can be a bit confusing at first glance. It may look like you need to join the Y to register — but you don’t! Scroll to the bottom of the registration screen and look for the “Continue as Non-Member” button.
Pricing
• $25/month for YMCA members
• $50/month for non-members
• Each monthly session includes 4 lessons that are 30 minutes long
• Fees are paid monthly when you register
Lesson Levels
• YMCA levels are grouped by age and skill
• For example:
o Level 2 (ages 3–5)
o Level 2 (ages 6–12)
YMCA skills levels are below.
• Kids are evaluated on day one and may be moved if needed
• If your child passes a level quickly, the YMCA staff will help you move up to the next level
• Dawn will be able to provide you with the most recent level she has on record if you’re not sure.
Parents on Deck
• Parents are allowed on the pool deck, but benches are located away from the swim lesson area to limit distractions
• You’re welcome to watch — just give the instructors space to bond with your child
• As always, parents are not permitted in the pool
Make-Up Policy
• The YMCA only offers make-up lessons if the pool is closed
• No make-ups are offered for vacations, illness, or schedule conflicts
This helps the Y keep the program affordable and fair for everyone.
Starting Age
• YMCA lessons begin at age 3
• Levels are divided by age group to make instruction developmentally appropriate
What If I Have Multiple Kids?
• If you have kids in different levels, they will likely have different time slots
• However, most lessons are scheduled within 30 minutes of each other
• More time slots may be added as instructor schedules are finalized
